Movie Poster questions
1.What is meant by the genre of a film?
The genre of the
film is the category
of the composition of the film. Such as in music or literature, characterized
by similarities in form, style, or subject matter.
2.How might the color scheme of the poster be related to the mood
or theme of a film?
When the colors
are bright the genre is most likely happier, however when the colors used in
the poster are dark the genre is more depressing, evil, stress full and the
movie will be more on the stressful side. The colors used are very important in
showing the mood, feeling and genre the film portays.
3.For each of the following examples, guess the genre, theme and
mood of the film, based on the poster graphic and colors.
In the movie, V for Vendetta, there is a lot of black, red and tan. There is also
rough shapes that are straight and less descriptive. Because of theses colors
and shapes the poster gives off the genre of evil and dark.
In the
movie, Johnny Depp is Sweeney Todd,
the poster is almost all black. It is hard to make out the picture. You can
make out a sitting figure in an attack/ dark room holding a small object in his
hand. There is a little red splattered into the black poster as well. Because
of the black and red and the scary figure the genre of this film is dark and
murderous.
In the movie poster of, The Proposal, there is a male and a female in black business
attire. She is holding a red ring box. The background is white and the
lettering is black and red. These colors and graphics make the genre seem professional
as well as sexy and funny. The red box and the word, Proposal, both being in
red try the two things together.
The movie poster, The U.S. vs. John Lennon, there is white, tan, red, white and blue.
The graphic is a hand making a peace sign and USA glasses on the hands. The
graphic and the colors make the genre seem funny and light hearted. It makes it
seem like there will be some history in it but still funny.
The movie poster of, The Black Swan, has white, red, and black. The graphic is of a swan
princess with red eyes, red lips and black wings on her eyes. The colors and
the graphic makes the genre seem serious and intense. The woman’s face is
serious but sexy. It looks like the movie would be an on the edge of your seat
movie.
The movie poster of the, Bee Movie, is white, yellow and black.
He graphic is of a cartoon bee that looks to be in his teens. His face and
posture seems cool and hip. The colors are light and playful. Because of the
light colors and fun cartoon graphic the genre seem to be light hearted and
funny. It looks like a family that everyone would enjoy.
4.For each of the movie posters shown above, what does the
depiction of the character(s) on the poster lead you to understand about the
story being told in the film?
In the movie, V for Vendetta, the characters look evil. One character looks sad
and the other has an evil smile on his face. The characters make the movie seem
like it would be scary and intense.
In the movie, Johnny Depp is Sweeney Todd, the character looks like he is about
to kill someone. He looks mad and angry. He makes the movie seem like is would
be a movie filled with action and murder.
In the movie poster of, The Proposal, the characters are close to each other. The women
looks like she is pressuring the man to marry her. The man looks confused. The
character makes the audience think that the movie will be about the women and
the man falling in love.
The movie poster, The U.S. vs. John Lennon, you can only see the character’s hand.
Although the character is making a peace sign, which makes me think that the
movie will be about fighting for peace or about the civil war when the USA
fought for our freedom and rights.
The movie poster of, The Black Swan, has a character who’s faces is serious. She has
dark makeup and black eyes. She is also wearing a crown. The character makes
the movie look like it would be about her being the black swan with and evil
twist and some dancing in it.

The character makes the movie seem like it would be about this teenage bee and
about his life as a teenage bee.

Design after Emil Kozak
In class we looked at examples of Emil Kozak. We then designed designs based on his designs. He had a lot of repetition and almost cartoon looking designs. I repeated my arrows and made my objects look cartoonish.
